Analysis and Design Considerations for Corrugated Hose Compensator

Introduction of corrugated hose compensator

Compensators can be divided into several categories, such as corrugated hose compensators, non-metallic compensators, sleeve compensators, square compensators, etc., and corrugated hose compensators and non-metallic compensators are more commonly used.

  • Corrugated hose compensator consists of corrugated hose (an elastic element) that constitutes its working body, and end pipes, brackets, flanges, ducts, and other attachments, belonging to a compensating element.

By utilizing the effective elongation and deformation of the corrugated tube of its working body, it absorbs the dimensional changes caused by thermal expansion and contraction, etc., in pipelines, ducts, containers, etc.

It can also compensate for the axial, lateral, and angular displacement of pipelines, ducts, containers, etc. It can also be used for noise reduction and vibration damping. It is widely used in modern industry.

  • Non-metallic compensator can compensate for the axial, lateral and angular displacement of pipelines, with characteristics such as no thrust, simplified support design, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, noise reduction and vibration damping, especially suitable for hot air and smoke pipes.

The role of corrugated hose compensator

  • Compensate and absorb the axial, lateral, and angular thermal deformation of pipes.

  • The expansion and contraction amount of the corrugated compensator facilitates the installation and disassembly of valve pipelines.

  • Absorb equipment vibration and reduce the impact of equipment vibration on pipelines.

  • Absorb the deformation caused by earthquakes and ground subsidence on pipelines.

The design, manufacture, installation and operation management of metal corrugated hose compensators are composed of multiple links, so the reliability should be considered from several aspects.

When selecting the material for the corrugated hose in the heating pipe network, in addition to its working efficiency, the medium, working temperature and external environment should also be considered, and the possibility of stress corrosion, water treatment agents and pipeline cleaning, which may affect the material should be considered. Based on this, the economic and actual production optimization of corrugated pipe materials are pointed out, including material performance, welding, forming, material cost, and performance.

Under normal circumstances, the PVC corrugated hose material should meet the following conditions:

  • High elastic limit, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, to ensure that the corrugated hose works normally.

  • Good plasticity, which is convenient for processing and forming of the corrugated hose, and can obtain sufficient hardness and strength through subsequent treatment processes (cold work hardening, heat treatment, etc.).

  • Good corrosion resistance to meet the working requirements of the corrugated hose in different environments.

  • Good welding performance to meet the welding requirements of the corrugated hose in the manufacturing process.

For the hot water pipe network laid in the trench, when the compensator is located in the pipeline at a low elevation, rainwater or accidental sewage may soak the corrugated hose, so a material with stronger corrosion resistance such as iron-nickel alloy and high nickel alloy should be considered.
